Maithon is Dhanbad in the state of Jharkhand. It constitutes the Damodar Valley Corporation, which was a part of the First Five Year Plan after India s independence. The Maithon Dam is on Barakar River that flows through West Bengal and Jharkhand. The dam was designed for flood control and is the biggest reservoir in the Damodar valley besides producing thermal and hydel electricity. The main task of the Maithon dam is to produce Hydroelectricty. Hydroelectricity is electricity generated by hydropower. The production of power is through the use of the gravitational force of falling or flowing water. It is the most widely used form of renewable energy. Furthermore, there are certain advantages of producing hydroelectricity. The major advantage is the elimination of the cost of fuel. Thus, the economy of the land heaves. Other advantage of a hydroelectric power project is Green house gas emissions.

Near Dhanbad in Jharkhand state, the Maithon Dam was constructed on the Barakar river for the purpose of flood control. The Maithon Dam is the largest reservoir in the Damodar valley. The Maithon Dam is the first underground power station in the entire Southeast Asia. Being the biggest reservoir in the Damodar Valley Corporation, Maithon Dam is located 52 km from Dhanbad. Initially the objective to build this dam was flood control, but eventually it serves the purpose of Hydel electric power as well as a tourist spot. A lake is adjoined to the dam, which is spread over an area of 65 sq km. The lake offers recreational facilities like boating and fishing. An underground power station installed at the Maithon Dam is the first of its kind in South East Asia. The dam has thrived as a tourist destination for the past years, owing to the adjacent deer park, birds sanctuary and Kalyaneshwari Temple. Nearest railhead of Maithon Dam is at Barakar, lying 8 km away. Regular buses services are available from Dhanbad lying 52 km away , Barakar and Asansol, and it hardly takes an hour to reach this beautiful dam.
