In Indian painting, realism arrived with the British who needed artists to paint Indian scenes for recording purpose. However, as a concept, it has travelled further.. Can anyone throw some light on the origin and development of the concept Realism in Indian paintings

This is a great question indeed Anjana.... Coming to the question...realism in art or realistic art refers to the School that tries to capture nature in exactness. It is mimesis proper. Realist art has two dimensions. In technique, it refers to the depiction of the subject matter in exact accurateness and in requisite proportions. In theme, it refers to the depiction of subjects in their true context. in Indian context, realism in art can only be used to refer to the realist techniques used in painting. These techniques too have been largely influenced by the West. It was with the Greeks that realist painting techniques were introduced to India. The Mauryan, Gandhar and Mathura arts of the 2nd century BC bear testimony to this. Some of the well-known painters who used realist techniques were Babu Rao Painter, Raja Ravi Verma and Hemen Majumdar. They used the realist technique of light and shade quite effectively.

I agree with you and Anjana both. In India realism arrived with the British because they needed artists to paint Indian scenes for recording purpose. There was little scope for romanticism and the prevailing early company school painters who used to paint daily scenes from Indian life without any element of fantasy. This is where artists like Hemen Majumdar differed as they used realism to depict life with a mix of fantasy.

Hi Roop. Thanks for your post. I just like to add here that realism or realist art in India refers to the art that tries to imitate nature in its exactness. In India Realist art has two dimensions. In technique, it refers to the depiction of the subject matter in exact accurateness and in requisite proportions. In theme, it refers to the depiction of subjects in their true context. But Roop you have pointed out that the British introduced the realistic art in India.. However what i feel that in Ancient India, the Greeks were the first to bring in realist influence as can bee seen in the Mauryan, Gandhar or Mathura Arts of 2nd century BC.With passing of time Indian Artists gradually moved away from such styles till the coming of the Company School artists in early 19th century. Siddhartha Staue: influnce of Greek Art in India Gandhar Sculpture Comapny school painting: photographic details in art With passing of time Indian Artists gradually moved away from such styles till the coming of the Company School artists in early 19th century. The objective of the Company artists was to capture the Indian lives in photographic details.

I think there is very less data documented on this aspect. Raja Ravi Verma is quite obviously a pioneer in realistic art. Like mentioned above the British viceroys used his talent to keep record of Indian culture and style. I am a big fan of realistic art and very much influenced by it.
