The Doctrine of lapse denied the right of succession in the native kingdom of the adopted sons which was an age-old practice in India, specially among the Hindu kings. As a result of this Doctrine of Lapse, Nana Saheb, the adopted son of Peshwa Baji Rao II was deprived of his succession rights and allowances which ultimately dragged him to side with the Sepoys and revolt against the British. By using this policy rather unscrupulously Lord Dalhausi had annexed one by one native kingdoms like Jhansi, Santra, Nagpur, Sambalpur and many others within a very short period.
